UK ETA for Tourism
Visit the UK for holidays, sightseeing and family visits with an ETA.
Overview
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) allows eligible, visa‑exempt travellers to visit the UK for tourism — including holidays, sightseeing and visiting family or friends.
An ETA is a digital pre‑travel authorisation linked to your passport. It does not replace border checks, and it does not permit paid work.
What you can and cannot do on a tourism ETA
| Allowed (examples) | Not allowed |
| Leisure travel, sightseeing, museum/heritage visits, tours. | Paid employment, running a business, or taking paid gigs. |
| Visiting family/friends; attending cultural or sports events as a spectator. | Paid performances or services (unless a separate visa route allows it). |
| Short study courses (≤ 6 months) at accredited providers. | Long‑term study, internships or work placements. |
Border officers may ask about your itinerary, accommodation and funds. Keep evidence handy and be clear that your trip is for tourism.
