UK ETA Validity

Duration, multiple entries, and passport linking explained.

How long is a UK ETA valid?

  • Up to 2 years

    Typically valid for two years from approval.

  • Linked to your passport

    If your passport expires sooner, the ETA ends on the passport expiry date.

If your passport expires before two years, your ETA expires with it.

How many entries are allowed?

  • Multiple entries

    You can enter the UK multiple times while your ETA is valid.

  • Stay length

    Up to 6 months per visit (shorter for some transit cases).

  • Border checks still apply

    ETA approval doesn’t guarantee entry; you must meet visitor rules at the border.

How passport linking works

  • One ETA, one passport

    Your ETA is digitally linked to the passport used in your application.

  • Travel with the same passport

    Details must match exactly (name, date of birth, passport number).

  • New passport = new ETA

    If you renew or replace your passport, apply for a new ETA.

Example A


ETA approved: 1 Feb 2025
Passport expires: 1 Aug 2026
ETA valid until 1 Aug 2026.

ETA approved: 1 Feb 2025
Passport expires: 1 Dec 2025
ETA ends 1 Dec 2025 (passport expiry).

Example C


New passport issued after ETA approval → Apply for a new ETA using the new passport.
